Shopify payment errors at checkout: why payments fail and what to check
When the payment step itself fails rather than a single card field, the cause is usually in your payment settings. What to check first.
A payment error is not the same as a card error
A mistyped card number is the shopper's problem, and they usually fix it themselves. A payment error that stops every shopper at the same step is almost always a store setting, and it blocks every order until it is fixed.
What to check in Settings, then Payments
- Test mode. A payment provider left in test mode after setup only accepts test cards. Real cards fail. Turn test mode off.
- Provider status. Check that your provider shows as active, and that there are no requests to finish account verification or add missing business details.
- Currencies and countries. If you sell in several currencies or markets, check the provider supports the currency and country the shopper is paying from.
- Recent changes. If payments worked until a certain day, check what changed that day: a new provider, an app that edits checkout, or new market settings.
How to test the fix
Place a real order on your own store with a real card, then refund it from the order page. A test order in test mode proves nothing about real cards.
Seeing it happen on your own store
JourneyLens separates payment errors from card-field errors, so you can see whether shoppers are mistyping or your checkout is refusing everyone. It counts each error once per press of Pay, and shows how much order value was in the checkouts that stopped there.
