Address and postal code errors in Shopify checkout
Why shoppers get stuck on the address form, which errors are typing mistakes, and the checkout settings that add fields nobody needed.
Postal code errors
Shopify checks the postal code against the country the shopper selected. Almost every postal code error is a typo or a code entered with the wrong country still selected. No setting fixes that, and it is only worth attention if shoppers leave after it more often than they correct it.
Fields you may not need
Every required field is another place to make a mistake. Shopify lets you choose whether some fields are hidden, optional or required.
- Open Settings, then Checkout, and find the customer information options.
- Check whether company name and address line 2 are set to required. For most stores selling to individuals, optional or hidden is enough.
- Check whether a phone number is required. If you do not need it for delivery, make it optional.
Shoppers pressing Pay with empty fields
When a shopper presses Pay before filling in every required field, Shopify highlights each empty one. That is normal and not a store problem, even when it shows as several errors at once.
Seeing it happen on your own store
JourneyLens groups the alerts from one press of Pay into one attempt, so an empty form reads as one incomplete press rather than a dozen errors. It separates typing mistakes from problems a setting can fix, and tells you which is which.
JourneyLens is $19 a month after a 7-day free trial.
